Stretching and moderate exercise can help overweight, postmenopausal women fall asleep more easily; but only if performed in the morning hours, according to a study published in journal Sleep.
"Postmenopausal women commonly report sleep problems," says Anne McTiernan of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. "Exercise may help to alleviate these problems, as long as it is performed early in the day."
The researchers found that women who exercised at a moderate rate for at least a half an hour each morning, seven days per week, had less trouble falling asleep than those who exercised less. Evening exercisers did not experience the same positive effects on sleep quality, though.
Lead author Shelley Tworoger, of the Harvard University Medical School, says a possible explanation of the finding is that morning exercise could help set circadian rhythms, or the bodies' internal clock, which in turn regulates sleep-inducing hormones such as melatonin. "Or it could be that exercising at night increases body temperature, whereas body temperature must go down to induce sleep," she says. "But neither of these hypotheses have been proven." |

Forget about clothes, it’s the hair that gains maximum importance for women in Sri Lanka when they want to make a style statement. Read on to find out more… Colombo: Beauty-conscious Sri Lankan women attach more importance to their hair than to clothes or make up and often judge others by the way they have dressed their tresses, a new survey has revealed. Conducted by the Lanka Market Research Bureau (LMRB) for Unilever in December 2007, the survey found that 48 percent of the 429 women interviewed strongly felt that hair was a crucial aspect of appearance or beauty. Another 45 percent were less sure, but granted that hair was an important aspect of beauty. |

Why does the winter weather cause so many people to develop dry skin? Even thinking about it can make skin itch. Frigid air, drying indoor heat and relentless winds take precious moisture out of your complexion and give nothing back in return. At other times of the year, when there is more humidity in the air, skin doesn't have to work so hard to retain its healthy, radiant appearance. But everything changes when the temperature drops; substances in skin that would normally keep water content normalized are depleted, and the skin's lipid (oil/emollient) capacity isn't enough to provide protection.
Healthy skin can be pictured as a multi-layer cake covered by a single sheet of clear plastic food wrap to keep it fresh. The plastic food wrap prevents the layers underneath from drying out through evaporation. The outermost layer of your skin (called the stratum corneum) acts a lot like plastic wrap (and is actually about the same thickness). The result is dry, uncomfortable, itchy and sometimes even cracked or sore skin. (Source: University of Iowa, Virtual Hospital, www.vh.org/adult/patient/dermatology/winterskin/.) Making matters worse, there is a lot of confusion about how to care for dry skin. For example, using soaps or drying cleansers, taking long baths or hot showers, or over-scrubbing skin with loofahs or too-abrasive scrubs can create, not prevent more skin woes. Follow these simple tips to keep your complexion looking smooth and flake-free. |

Just like puberty, menopause is a normal part of life. It is really the end of a long, slow process. When you are in your mid-30's, your ovaries begin to change how much estrogen and progesterone, two female hormones, they make. These are both important for normal menstrual cycles and successful pregnancy. Estrogen helps to keep bones healthy. It may also have an effect on cholesterol levels in your blood, help keep skin and arteries more elastic, and possibly help memory. Although very rare before the age of 40, menapause can happen anytime from your 30's to your mid-50's or even later. Smokers often begin menopause earlier than non-smokers. If you have both ovaries removed (bilateral oophorectomy) during a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), you may have the symptoms of menopause right away, no matter your age. Once your uterus is removed, your periods will stop. |
