The bravest little girl

brave little girl kate mehigan

The story of Kate Mehigan, a nine year old girl who died of brain cancer this month, is one of the saddest things I've ever read, but also one of the most uplifting. Her diary of being treated for cancer (she had nine bouts of chemotherapy) is published in the Sunday Times News Review this weekend, but here is more of it for those of you who would like to know more. This month is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, if you would like to be involved go to Clic Sargent's website on www.clicsargent.org.uk/getinvolved or call 0845 1204442.

This is Kate's diary from her book My Story that her parents hope to publish.

"It all started off in November 2002 when I went into hospital for a check-up because I kept being sick and they found a lump in my brain. The next day I went to the Operating Theatre. There they injected me with Penguin Milk!! That’s an anaesthetic which is a medicine to make you go to sleep and it feels icy cold going in. When it starts to work it feels like I’m flying away somewhere as I drift to sleep. Mum says I was in surgery for over 6 hours!

Can Deodorants cause breast cancers

breast cancer

Frequent underarm shaving combined with deodorant use might increase women's chances of getting breast cancer, claims a study based on a survey of over 400 women with breast cancer in the US. It is the first evidence of such a link to appear in a peer-reviewed journal, but it is far from conclusive.

Claims that deodorants cause breast cancer hit the headlines recently when Phillipa Darbre of the University of Reading in the UK published a paper reporting that preservatives used in antiperspirants and deodorants can be found in breast tumours. But this in no way proved that the preservatives, called para-hydroxybenzoic acids or parabens, actually caused the tumours, and most deodorants no longer contain any parabens. The US study, by Chicago doctor Kris McGrath of Northwestern University, does suggest that deodorants or antiperspirants might be linked with breast cancer, but only together with underarm shaving. And it has too many weaknesses to be regarded as definitive.

We often hear the adage that the eyes are the windows to a person’s soul. In a sense it is true, because we can almost always know what kind of person someone is, or what is the underlying meaning of the words he or she speaks, simply by looking at the eyes. The eyes are prominent features of the face and are used a lot in communicating through non-verbal language. A person’s eyes are the features that attract attention whenever other people look at the face, women would do well to play up their eyes to enhance the face. There is nothing more attractive than lovely, tantalizing eyes.

The trick to creating eyes that will merit more than a second glance lies in the proper application of eye makeup, particularly the eye shadow. Here are a few tips and tricks guaranteed to make the eyes look enchanting.

Female Mammals May Select Out Competing Sperm

Now some bad news here for guys

sperm

FRIDAY, Nov. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Scientists may have proof that female mammals' reproductive systems detect the presence of sperm and react by changing conditions in the uterus.

An international team of researchers say this may be the molecular mechanism behind post-copulatory sexual selection, where females who've mated with several partners can actually influence which sperm fertilizes the egg.

Learning more about this post-mating "ladies choice" may have important implications for in-vitro fertilization (IVF), cloning and animal breeding, according to study author Alireza Fazeli, of the University of Sheffield in the U.K. It also provides a possible explanation for female promiscuity in certain species.

In this study, Fazeli and colleagues found chemical evidence of a sperm-recognition system in the oviducts of female pigs, who have a reproductive system that's similar to humans.

Beauty tips from Sunsilk

here are some beauty tips from Sunsilk

Focus Face face wash

Most women just tend to take care of their face and spend a fortune on buying facial care products. They forget to take care of their neck, back and bust. They even forget to moisturise their body and legs leaving them dry and peeling.

Cure: Stop giving the rest of your body step-motherly treatment. When you pamper your skin, go the whole way and restore the glow and beauty of your neck, back and bust. For these, you don’t have to invest in separate products. Just extend your face care to these areas. Use your facial scrub to exfoliate your neck, back and bust. Cleanse the areas regularly with a creamy cleanser every day when you take your make-up off at night. Since age shows the fastest in these areas, you can invest in a good anti-ageing cream and use it on these areas even if you don’t apply the cream on your face. This will ensure a supple neck and bust.
